According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), an estimated 160 million people suffer from work-related diseases, with some two million dying annually as a result. About eight per cent of these occupational disease deaths can be directly attributed to respiratory complications, namely chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders (COPD), asbestos-related diseases (ARDs), pneumoconiosis, and silicosis. BC unions call for a licensing system to regulate asbestos removal firms and better protect the health and safety of workers.

 

This call to action comes after a recent BC Supreme Court judgement which permanently banned such a company, found to have broken health and safety regulations, from providing asbestos-removal services.

As part of the 2019 occupational disease strategy, WorkSafeBC is conducting an enforcement initiative aimed at reducing occupational disease and death caused by exposure to asbestos in residential demolition and renovation worksites.

With proper planning and oversight of work, employers in the residential demolition and renovation industry can reduce or eliminate the risk of worker exposure to asbestos fibres.
